Moped driver suffers ‘life-threatening injuries’ in Maui crash

A 51-year-old Wailuku man remains hospitalized after he lost control of the moped he was driving on Monday and struck the back of a sports utility vehicle on South Kihei Road.

Maui police said the moped driver was taken in critical condition with life-threatening injuries to Maui Memorial Medical Center following the 7:38 p.m. incident. The driver of the 2013 SUV, a 36-year-old man from Honolulu, was not injured.

The accident occurred on South Kihei Road near Alanui Ke Alii Drive. 

Police said the moped driver was heading south when he hit the back of the 2013 Nissan SUV.

The moped driver was not wearing a helmet.
