All lanes of H-1 westbound reopened following brush fires

Honolulu firefighters have contained two smaller West Oahu brush fires but not before they wreaked havoc with H-1 westbound traffic Thursday afternoon.

The Honolulu Fire Department got the first alarm for a brush fire  before the Makakilo offramp at about 12:25 p.m. The fire was declared contained at about 1 p.m., fire Capt. David Jenkins said.

Honolulu Police Department dispatchers reported the two right-bound lanes approaching the offramp closed for more than an hour, but both were back online by 3 p.m.

Meanwhile, firefighters also battled a small brush fire just off the freeway shortly after the H-1 Kunia-Ewa Beach interchange. That fire was reported about 1:35 p.m. and contained about 2:09 p.m., Jenkins said.

Both fires each burned about half an acre of brush but did not approach property, Jenkins said.

Social media posters reported the fires were backing up westbound traffic through mid-afternoon.
