Duke Kahanamoku Beach came in at No. 2 on Stephen P. Leatherman’s annual Top 10 Beach List.

A 63-year-old man died and a 57-year-old man was in critical condition Saturday after separate water-related incidents in Waikiki, authorities said.

At about 7:30 a.m., the older man was found unresponsive in the water outside the area of Duke Kahanamoku statue, where he apparently had been surfing, according to police and an Emergency Medical Services report. The incident occurred before lifeguards were on duty.

Paramedics took the man in critical condition to Straub Clinic & Hospital, where he later died.

At the same time of the first incident, paramedics also responded to a possible drowning near 2405 Kalakaua Ave., an Emergency Medical Services report said. Paramedics took a 57-year-old man to the hospital in critical condition.
