Hawaii County fire rescue personnel assisted a pair of lost hikers off a trail in the Volcano district on Sunday.

The two hikers used a cellphone to call for help when they encountered unfamiliar terrain. Rescuers located the hikers using GPS coordinates obtained from their call.

The hikers were airlifted from the trail, located at the end of Ala Kapena Drive. No injuries were reported but the hikers were interviewed by the Department of Land and Natural Resources for apparently entering the restricted area without authorization.
