Prison adds surveillance equipment after drone incident

COLUMBIA, S.C. >> A South Carolina maximum security prison is getting new surveillance equipment after someone tried to smuggle contraband into the institution with a drone aircraft earlier this year.

The State newspaper reported two new surveillance towers and thermal imaging cameras are being added at the Lee Correctional Institution in Bishopville to help prevent the smuggling of cellphones, drugs and other contraband.

Corrections Department Director Bryan Stirling says the contraband serves as money to inmates and creates problems for staff.

A man was arrested in July In connection with an attempt to use a drone to fly over the fence and drop off cellphones, tobacco products and marijuana. Officials found the drone and material in bushes outside the prison.
