10 injured — some seriously — on Oahu ringing in New Year

Honolulu Emergency Services said it was busy during the during the New Year’s Eve celebration, responding to 12 people with breathing difficulties, 21 who had been assaulted and 10 injured by fireworks.

The injuries took place within a 12-hour period from 7 p.m. Wednesday to 7 a.m. Thursday. 

One man was in critical condition Wednesday night, after being injured in the face by exploding fireworks on Kuhi Street in Waialua.

At least three people suffered eye injuries, including a six-year-old boy in Waimanalo.

The boy was injured by a popper to the eye, but a parent refused transport to the emergency room, emergency services said.

An 18-year-old man was looking down the tube of an aerial firework when he was shot in the eye. He was transported in serious condition to a hospital.

A 22-year-old man, who also was in serious condition and transported to a hospital, was injured in the eye in Waianae, when aerial fireworks exploded in a plastic plumbing pipe, emergency services said.
