Pedestrian struck by Kauai police car dies

A pedestrian died this weekend after a Kauai police officer responding to a pedestrian crash apparently struck the victim a second time, a Kauai County news release said.

The man was first struck at about 9:30 p.m. Saturday by an eastbound vehicle on Kaumualii Highway near the Kaumakani Post Office.

An officer responding to the scene in a police vehicle heading eastbound apparently struck the man again, the release said.

The victim, who has not been identified, was taken to Wilcox Memorial Hospital where he died. No one else was injured.

Police closed the highway at 9:45 p.m. to investigate and reopened the roadway at 4 a.m.

An autopsy is scheduled for Monday.

The police officer has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation under standard procedure.
