A Halawa Correctional Facility inmate attacked a guard Wednesday morning during a routine cell inspection, said Public Safety spokeswoman Toni Schwartz.

Inmate Daniel Walker is housed at the special needs facility at Halawa and is serving time for second-degree theft.

Schwartz said the sergeant, who was attacked at 9 a.m., was accompanied by another corrections officer, when making the cell inspection.

She said the other officer acted quickly to restrain the inmate during the attack, which lasted less than a minute.

The sergeant went to the hospital on his own for minor injuries, Schwartz said.
