Suspect in San Francisco dismembered body case dies
SAN FRANCISCO » A man arrested, then released in connection with a dismembered body found inside a suitcase in San Francisco has died, authorities said Sunday.
Mark Andrus, 54, died after admitting himself to a hospital on Saturday, police Sgt. Monica MacDonald said.
She said the police department couldn’t confirm the circumstances that led to his hospitalization, or the cause of his death.
The city Medical Examiner’s office declined to release information about Andrus.
"I’m very sad to hear of his passing," Andrus’ attorney, Public Defender Jeff Adachi, said in a statement. "From what I can tell, Mark was a good person."
Andrus was considered a person of interest since a suitcase stuffed with human remains was found in the South of Market area on Jan. 28.

Police said security camera footage showed Andrus in the area where a suitcase stuffed with a headless torso was dumped near a Goodwill thrift store. More body parts were found in a trash can nearby.
A tip led officers to an apartment in the city’s Tenderloin neighborhood, where they took him into custody. He was released a few days later when prosecutors declined to charge him with murder.
They said there wasn’t enough evidence to charge him.
The medical examiner has yet to determine a cause of death or identify the victim.
