The woman confronted Kaaihue, who was with another woman in a van parked on the roadside at Kahaluu Beach Park in Kona and poured gasoline on the van, according to a police report.
Kaaihue left the van and struggled with the woman and gasoline ended up on their clothing and bodies, police said.
Witnesses told police the woman used a lighter to set both herself and Kaaihue on fire.
An autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.
