Honolulu in global top 50 for quality of life
Honolulu is the 36th-best city in the world for quality of life, according to a new ranking.
The 2015 Mercer Quality of Living list cites Vienna, Austria, at the top, Zurich, Switzerland at No. 2, Auckland, and New Zealand at No. 3.
Munich, Germany and Vancouver, Canada, are fourth and fifth, respectively, on the list of 230 cities around the world ranked by Mercer.
In North America, Canadian cities topped those in the U.S., with Toronto ranked 15th and Ottawa at 16th.
U.S. cities besting Honolulu on the list were San Francisco (27), and Boston (34).
Mercer prepares the ranking to help employers determine employee compensation for international assignments.

“Cultures, societies, and comparatively different climates, as well as political instability, high crime rates, and poor infrastructure can be difficult to navigate and settle down in for employees and their families,” said Slagin Parakatil, Mercer principal, in a statement. “Employers need to assess whether their staff and families will encounter any drop in quality of living when relocating and ensure they are fairly compensated for it.”
