Kailua not among top vacation rental destinations

Four Hawaii vacation rental destinations are among the TripAdvisor.com Top 10 in the U.S., and they don’t include Kailua, on Oahu.
Wailea, Maui was rated at No. 6, while Waikoloa on Hawaii island ranks 7th, Kaanapali, Maui is at No. 8, and Volcano on Hawaii island rounds out the top 10.
Asheville, N. Carolina tops the list, with Sedona, Arizona at No. 2 and New Orleans, La., at No. 3.
A TripAdvisor spokeswoman confirmed that based on reviews from site-users, Kailua vacation rentals were rated below 4.73 of a possible five, which is the rating Volcano received.
Vacation rentals in the Windward Oahu neighborhood have caused controversy for years because of complaints that many are illegal.
The travel site’s 6th annual vacation rentals survey of some 1,800 respondents found that 59 percent plan to stay at a vacation rental this year, up from 52 percent who stayed in such accommodations in 2014.
Some 87 percent of site users are more likely to book a vacation rental due to increased availability of online information, the survey found.
