Man killed in 3-vehicle Kailua-Kona crash is identified

Hawaii County Police identified a 56-year-old Kona man who died following a three-vehicle collision Tuesday in Kailua-Kona.

Robert Pfleger, of Holualoa, was driving a 2007 Yamaha motorcycle that was hit by a 2004 Jeep Cherokee at the intersection of Hina Lani  and Kamanu streets at about 5:24 p.m., police said.

The Jeep, driven by a 31-year-old Kailua-Kona woman, turned left onto Kamanu Street and hit the motorcycle traveling east on Hina Lani Street, then collided head-on with Ford F-150 pickup truck, driven by a 74-year-old man, traveling north on Kamanu Street.

Pfleger, who was wearing a helmet, sustained injuries to his legs and head from the collision. He was taken to Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 6:04 p.m. An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.

The drivers of the truck and Jeep Cherokee were not injured.

Officers arrested the driver of the Jeep on suspicion of negligent homicide. She was released pending further investigation.
