HAMBURG TOWNSHIP, Mich. » Mmmm, doughnuts.
Volunteers lined up about 24,000 doughnuts — the basic, circular kind — on Friday at a festival in Michigan, hoping to set a Guinness World Record.
Work on the "Hamburg Mile" started in the morning in Hamburg Township, northwest of Detroit.
"The early estimate was 2 miles, 750 feet," Hamburg Enhanced Recreation Organization president Joanna Hardesty told the Livingston Daily Press & Argus. A mile is 5,280 feet.
If verified as accurate, it will eclipse the 1,841 feet and 10 inches set last year in Germany. A surveyor and witnesses were on hand, and their statements will be forwarded to Guinness World Records.
Hardesty said a machine attached to a tractor dropped the days-old doughnuts in winding lines. Volunteers followed, making sure each yeasty treat touched.
"We started at 8:15 and by 10:45 we were done, as far as laying them down," she added. "It was a wonderful community effort. … We didn’t achieve our goal — we went way over the top."
All but 10 of the donated doughnuts were used. After the line, the doughnuts will serve one last purpose: a snack for farm animals.
