A tropical depression threatened the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument Sunday but poses no risk to the main Hawaiian islands.

Tropical Depression Five-C, with maximum sustained winds of 35 mph, was about 395 miles northwest of Johnston Island in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, moving north-northeast at 9 mph late Saturday night, according to the Central Pacific Hurricane Center on Oahu.

A tropical storm warning is in effect for portions of the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument from French Frigate Shoals to Maro Reef to Lisianski Island, while a tropical storm watch is in effect from Lisianski Island to Pearl and Hermes.

The weather system is expected to grow into a minimal tropical storm, called Malia, Sunday with maximum sustained winds of 40 mph. But the storm is expected to continue on a northerly path far from the main Hawaiian islands, according to the hurricane center.
