UH soccer team swept on road again

The Hawaii soccer team had its chances Sunday afternoon but fell in dramatic fashion, 3-2, at Nevada’s Mackay Stadium.

UH (2-6-1) dropped to 0-4 on the mainland this season in getting swept for the second straight road trip. The Rainbow Wahine lost 3-1 at UNLV on Friday.

The Wahine showed some fight, twice getting an equalizer goal. But both times Nevada came back with an immediate response.

Dani Crawford scored from in the box on a Storm Kenui corner kick with under four minutes to play, knotting it at 2-2. But the game-winning goal came less than a minute later, when Hannah Wuensche converted a penalty kick past UH goalkeeper Alexis Mata.

Raisa Strom-Okimoto had UH’s first goal of the game on an unassisted shot from about 30 yards out. The freshman’s first career score tied it at 1-1 in the 63rd minute.

That was also short-lived as Nevada’s Nikki Mitsuyasu, an ‘Iolani graduate, tapped a ball to the far post from a wide angle past Mata in the 65th minute. It was Mitsuyasu’s first career goal.

Seven yellow cards were issued in the match, including five on Hawaii. UH defender Sarah Lau received her second yellow in the final moments, meaning she was sent off with a red.

UH returns home to play BYU-Hawaii on Thursday.
