Hawaii moves up to No. 11 in volleyball poll
Continuing to win equals continued upward movement in the national volleyball poll for Hawaii. The Rainbow Wahine (10-1), riding a five-match win streak, moved up a spot to No. 11 in Monday’s AVCA Coaches Division I Top 25, their highest ranking of the season.
Also Monday, no Hawaii player was selected for weekly honors by the Big West. Junior hitter Nikki Taylor had won three consecutive Player of the Week honors and sophomore libero Savanah Kahakai was last week’s Defensive Player of the Week.
Breaking into the poll for the first time this season is defending Big West champion Long Beach State (10-3). The 49ers and the Wahine are two of five non-Power Five conference teams ranked, the others being No. 10 BYU, No. 19 Colorado State and No. 23 Pacific.
Defending national champion Penn State (11-0) remained the unanimous No. 1 for a second straight week as the top five were unchanged. Following the Nittany Lions are Texas (10-1), USC (12-0), Nebraska (9-1) and Florida (8-1). Rounding out the Top 10 are Washington (10-0), Arizona State (11-0), Stanford (6-2), Illinois (9-2) and BYU (10-1).
Hawaii finishes out its opening homestand when opening Big West play this week with UC Santa Barbara (4-7) Friday and Cal Poly (8-3) Saturday. Both matches are at 7 p.m.
