Tropical Storm Nora’s time as a hurricane may be brief
Tropical Storm Nora is expected to strengthen into a hurricane tonight, but should quickly weaken as it takes a turn to the north before reaching Hawaii, the Central Pacific Hurricane Center said.
At 5 p.m., Nora was about 860 miles east-southeast of Hilo and moving west-northwest at 9 mph with maximum sustained winds of 70 mph.
Forecasters say Nora should take a north turn on Tuesday and move away from the islands.
However, there is a chance that the tradewinds may blow what’s left of the system back toward the islands later this week.
Nora was the 14th tropical storm to form in the East Pacific this season.
