Police find no danger in ‘suspicious package,’ Kapahulu lanes reopening
Honolulu police are now reopening Kapahulu Avenue lanes closed while a bomb squad investigated a “suspicious package” found this afternoon during the arrest of a suspect in an attempted bank robbery.
The bomb squad has determined that the package is not dangerous, police said.
Police closed all lanes of Kapahulu Avenue between Leahi Avenue and Campbell Avenue shortly after 2 p.m. And the suspect is in custody after an attempted bank robbery in Waikiki, police said.
Witnesses said a man tried to hold up the Kalakaua Avenue branch of Bank of Hawaii with what he said was a bomb in his backpack. He was later apprehended on Kapahulu.
The backpack was situated against a fence near the Ala Wai Golf Course.
