Woolsey named starting quarterback against UNLV

Interim Hawaii head coach Chris Naeole announced Ikaika Woolsey will be the starting quarterback for Saturday’s road game against UNLV.

Max Wittek, who has endured knee and foot injuries, has started eight of nine games this season.

Naeole said Woolsey and Wittek have had equal reps in practices on Tuesday and today. Naeole noted that Woolsey “came in and he moved the ball.”

In making the decision, Naeole said: “I don’t have the option of worrying about feelings. I’m going to do what I feel is right and best for the team.”

Naeole said the quarterback competition is ongoing.

“I told Ikaika I’m not afraid to pull the trigger and put Max in,” Naeole said.

Naeole said Wittek has been sharp in this week’s practices.

But Naeole said Woolsey also has played well enough to earn the start.

“It could be game day (and) I could change my mind,” Naeole said. “Right now (Woolsey) is our guy and we’re going to support him.”
