Police warn of IRS phone scam

The Honolulu Police Department is advising residents to immediately hang up on anyone claiming to be an Internal Revenue Service investigator who says the taxpayer owes the government money.

The caller tells the residents that they are under investigation and owe money to the IRS. Residents may think that the caller is legitimate because the caller ID number appears as 529-3111 — the phone number for the HPD’s main line, police said. The caller is able to do this using technology called “spoofing,” which allows callers to use fake caller ID numbers.

Police said the IRS does not contact residents or demand payment by phone.

They got it backwards; the IRS owes me money.

I’ve already received Five (5)IRS scam phone messages and its becoming hilarious now. If our government already has the technology to monitor and listen to all our phone calls and routinely back-up these files, how hard would it be to trace these IRS scam calls to the original caller? I know they ask the public to report it, but I’m pretty sure our government already has the sophisticated high technology to uncloak spoofing technology and easily identify word recognition to lock on to specific conversation content “IRS, Lawsuit, Final Notice, etc.” that would automatically track these calls to the originator.

If I ask the caller to send me a cashiers check for $250 to cover expenses to pay them … would I be just as illegal as them?
