Hawaii surfer Gavin Gillette caught a wave on Dec. 9 during the Billabong Pipe Invitational at Ehukai Beach Park.

A high surf advisory remains in effect today for most northern shores of the Hawaiian islands, which will also see blustery trade winds into next week, forecasters say.

The National Weather Service in Honolulu said surf of 18 to 22 feet will pound northern shores from Maui to Niihau. The advisory, which does not include Lanai and the Big Island, lasts until 6 p.m.

Forecasters say beach-goers should exercise caution and expect strong longshore and rip currents that will make swimming dangerous.

Trade winds, meanwhile, will intensify through Friday, and remain strong into next week, the weather service said. Clouds and showers will be limited mainly to windward slopes, but by Sunday, showers will increase and drift into leeward areas, forecasters said.

By Thursday and Friday, winds may strengthen enough that it may become necessary to issue a gale warning for the channels and wind advisories for select areas on land, they said today.

Northeast trade winds of 25 mph, and gusts up to 36 mph, are predicted for Honolulu by Thursday and Friday, with the same weather pattern continuing into next week. High temperatures in the low-80s are expected through the weekend, with nighttime lows in the mid-70s.
