NASHVILLE, Tenn. >> Tennessee Titans general manager Ruston Webster is out, and interim coach Mike Mularkey will be a candidate as the team starts its coaching search.

The Titans also announced Monday that Steve Underwood will oversee the searches as president and chief executive officer, with his interim tag removed.

Controlling owner Amy Adams Strunk said in a statement that the Titans have fallen far short of the goal to be one of the NFL’s elite franchises.

“We share our fans’ frustration about the team’s recent performance, and we are committed to doing everything we can to return our team to a perennial postseason contender,” Strunk said.

Webster’s contract expired after this season. He was promoted to general manager Jan. 18, 2012 after two seasons as vice president of player personnel. He also worked with Seattle and Tampa Bay. But the Titans went 18-46 in his seasons and just 5-27 the last two years.

Vin Marino, vice president of football administration, will run football operations during the search for a new general manager.

Underwood came out of retirement last March when Strunk took over as controlling owner and co-chairman of the team’s board of directors. He originally agreed to stay on through the season with the franchise he has worked at for 35 years. He was senior executive vice president and general counsel between 2008 and 2011 when he retired.

“I feel his leadership is vital in order to move us forward,” Strunk said of Underwood. “He has brought much-needed stability to our organization, and I look forward to progress that will be made under his leadership.”

Underwood said the Titans have a lot of work remaining to set the franchise up for long-term success.

“We will continue to do everything in our power to move this organization forward,” Underwood said. “I believe brighter days are on the horizon for our franchise, and I am thankful for this opportunity.”

Underwood scheduled a news conference for Monday afternoon. His first priority will be finding a new general manager and a coach for a franchise that holds the No. 1 pick overall in the 2016 draft and is coming off its worst back-to-back seasons since 1983-84.

Mularkey went 2-7 since taking over as interim coach Nov. 3 when the Titans fired Ken Whisenhunt after a 3-20 record and three seasons left on his contract. Mularkey has an overall record of 18-39 with stops as coach in Buffalo in 2004 and 2005, and in Jacksonville in 2012.
