Northwest swell expected to bring surf up to 16 feet today

A new northwest swell is forecast to bring advisory-level surf to the smaller Hawaiian islands today.

Officials at the National Weather Service expect surf up to 12 to 16 feet along the north and west shores of Kauai County and the north shores of Oahu, Maui and Molokai. Surf up to 8 to 12 feet is expected along the west shores of Oahu and Molokai.

Weather officials issued a high surf advisory today, which is scheduled to go into effect at noon and run through 6 a.m. Saturday.

Beachgoers are adivsed to heed all advice given by lifeguards.

    Visitors need to understand the the ocean in Hawaii may appear calm at the top, there really is a very strong current below the surface of the water. Only the professionals should attempt to enter stormy conditions.
