Haleiwa Alii Beach Park remains closed during search operations
Haleiwa Alii Beach Park remains closed today as rescue crews use both areas during the search for survivors from Thursday night’s crash of two Marine helicopters off Oahu’s North Shore.
The Department of Parks and Recreation has made Haleiwa Alii Beach Park available as a recovery area, and a park facility is also being used to provide meals to rescue workers, the city said in a news release.
Portions of the Haleiwa small boat harbor are being sued as an emergency command center, the Department of Land and Natural Resources said in another news release.
Entry roads to the harbor, a boat launch ramp and trailer parking area are blocked as emergency vehicles and search helicopters use the area.
Officials are also asking people to immediately report any sightings of possible debris from two Marine helicopters that crashed off Hawaii.
Debris sightings can be reported to 911 or the Coast Guard at 535-3372.

People should avoid moving or touching any objects that wash up, officials said.
Two Marine Corps helicopters carrying six crew members each went down off the North Shore while on a nighttime training mission just before midnight Thursday.
The 12 Marines remain missing. Their names haven’t been released.
Although the launch ramp close to Haleiwa Joe’s is open, the DNLR reminds boaters to check marine advisory warnings because of the dangerous northwest swell that is bringing large waves through the weekend.
The Coast Guard is also advising people to stay out of North Shore waters because of the debris field from the crash.

I pray they are found and brought home safely. So sad,,,
Respect for all the service men and women who take risks in the line of duty to serve our country.
hope its not – but just wondering if this is an act of terrorism?
Anyone investigating the individuals on the two helicopters?
With today’s fancy technology, what is the hold up in locating…
Location and scanning devices do not work or do not work well under water.

We ask our finest sons and daughters to do things that are extremely difficult and dangerous. My heart goes out to friends and families. It’s probably a good day to say thank you to service members and let them know that they have our love and support.
SA, what’s up with this old 2001 photo? Surely you have something more timely and appropriate to post by now.
No kidding this photo shows calm seas. I think they need to update some of their photos.
Story says the park is closed amd “both areas” are closed. What are the two areas? This is such poor writing. Story also says the boat harbor is being “sued.” What the heck is this? This your lead story and all mix up. Auwe.
SA, along with the boat harbor there are 2 City beach parks being used for rescue efforts: the Haleiwa Alii Beach Park (surf contests) and the Haleiwa Regional Park (soccer fields and war memorial). Look it up. And show some respect for this extremely somber news event and post a more appropriate timely photo. This is a 15-yr old photo of school kids. Sloppy.
