Man dies after hit-and-run near Maui Marketplace

A 41-year-old man died Friday from a hit-and-run after he was walking near Maui Marketplace, Maui police said.

The man, who had no local address, was walking westbound on Dairy Road about 115 feet south of Ohekani Street when he was struck by a pickup truck traveling north on Dairy Road around 9:24 p.m.

The pedestrian was not in a marked crosswalk at the time of the collision, police said.

The man was transported in critical condition to Maui Memorial Medical Center, where he died.

The truck fled the area and continued north on Dairy Road.

The truck is described as a midsize pickup truck with front end damages and a broken headlight, police said.

It’s unknown at this time whether speed, drugs, or alcohol played a role in the crash, police said.

The victim’s identity is being witheld pending a positive identification and notification of the next of kin.

This is Maui County’s first traffic fatality this year, compared to zero at this time last year.

    Hmmmm. Sounds like a homeless guy either practicing suicide by car or trying to win a lottery. I guess the better choice won.

    Another Millennial trying to beat the system by not using a marked crosswalk. Five extra minutes to walk towards it and use it, would have saved two months in the hospital in a car accident.

    Maui is becoming like the metro city that O’ahu is. Better be careful crossing the road. Cars are just not willing to stop, and lose a few seconds for their patience.
