Hawaii senior Ashleigh Karaitiana drained a 3-pointer with 14 seconds left to give the Rainbow Wahine basketball team a 63-62 win over UC Santa Barbara today in Santa Barbara, Calif.
After giving up a steal and a layup that pushed UCSB ahead 62-60 with 24 seconds left, UH called timeout and Destiny King drove into the lane, passed out to an open Karaitiana at the top of the key and her shot rattled in for the game-winner. UCSB’s Makala Roper’s 3-pointer was short and King secured the rebound to seal the UH victory.
King led the Wahine with 17 points and Karaitiana and Kalei Adolpho added 12 each in UH’s fourth straight win. The Wahine improved to 14-9 overall and 7-3 in Big West play in completing a sweep of this week’s road trip.
Onome Jemerigbe led UCSB (8-15, 5-4) with 13 points and Je Zhe Newton added 12 points and 13 rebounds for the Gauchos.
UH opened up a 12-point lead in the second quarter and took a 30-24 advantage into halftime. UCSB jumped ahead with an 11-1 run bridging the third and fourth quarters to take a 45-40 lead.
UH put together a 6-0 spurt and took the lead at 54-53 on Adolpho’s putback with 2:51 left. The Wahine inched out to a 60-57 lead when Roper hit a 3 to tie the game with 48 seconds left.
On UH’s next possession, Chaya Durr poked the ball away from King and went in for a breakaway layup to give the Gauchos a 62-60 lead with 24 seconds remaining. But Karaitiana’s second 3-pointer of the period gave UH the lead for good.
The Wahine return home to face Long Beach State on Thursday at the Stan Sheriff Center.
