Wahine softball sweeps on tourney’s opening night

Hawaii junior Kanani Aina Cabrales hit two home runs and earned a complete-game victory in the Rainbow Wahine softball team’s doubleheader sweep in the Bank of Hawaii Invitational tonight at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

Aina Cabrales hit her first home run of the season in UH’s 9-2 win over Utah Valley in its first game of the day and launched another in a 10-1 five-inning rout of Portland State.

UH (7-6) hit four home runs in the doubleheader, with senior second baseman Tayana Mata setting the tone with a three-run shot in a six-run first inning outburst against Utah Valley (4-8). Heather Morales added a three-run blast against Portland State (1-11).

Brittany Hitchcock (4-4) got the start against UVU and struck out four, walked none and gave up six hits in a complete-game victory.

Aina Cabrales (4-2) held PSU to three hits with one walk and one strikeout. She gave up a run in the top of the first, then gave herself the lead with an RBI single in the bottom of the inning and hit her second homer of the night in the fourth inning.

The tournament continues Saturday with UH facing Portland State and Utah Valley in another doubleheader starting at 2:30 p.m.
