Maui firefighters responded to three separate brush fires on Saturday.
At 4:08 a.m., Lahaina firefighters responded to a small brush fire in Launiupoko.
About 2,000 square feet of brush was burning in an open field about a half mile mauka from the Honoapiilani Highway.
The fire was under control at 4:26 a.m. and extinguished at 4:50 a.m.
The cause of the fire was undetermined.
In Paia, firefighters responded to a brush fire off Baldwin Avenue at 8:44 a.m.
Firefighters arrived at 8:49 a.m. and found an acre of sugar cane on fire above the Paia Gym.
Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar employees arrived at 9:38 a.m. and extinguished the unscheduled cane fire.
At 1:37 p.m., a brush fire was reported near the Puunene sugar mill.
Firefighters arrived at 1:44 p.m. to see Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar employees on scene attempting to put out a fire burning in a big 15-foot pile of bagasse. Firefighters assisted them with additional water supply and left the scene at 3:11 p.m.
Firefighters believe the bagasse pile spontaneously ignited from the extreme heat from the decomposing organic matter.
No injuries were reported and no structures were threatened in all three incidents.
