Swimmer found in underwater cave identified

A 30-year-old man who died in waters off Ninini Beach on Kauai has been identified as Irwin Cadiz of Kapaa.

At about 5 p.m. Saturday, fire rescue personnel aboard Air One responded to the scene after police dispatch received a call from a fisherman of a male swimmer in distress off Ninini, also known as Running Waters, according to the Kauai Fire Department.

The rescue crew found Cadiz unresponsive underwater in a cave before they brought him to shore.

Firefighters performed CPR until medics arrived. He was transported to Wilcox Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

An autopsy is scheduled to be conducted later this week.

This is the third drowning that occurred on Kauai so far this year compared to none at the same time last year.
