Marine who died after boat capsized in Kaneohe Bay identified

The Marines have identified the 24-year-old Kaneohe Marine who died Friday after the boat he was in capsized in Kaneohe Bay as Sgt. Jaylon T. Walker.

Walker served as an aircraft electronic communications system technician with Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 24, Marine Aircraft Group 24, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing stationed on Marine Corps Base Hawaii.

“Sgt. Walker was a fine Marine and will be truly missed by everyone here in the squadron, said Lt. Col. Robert Flannery, commanding officer of MALS 24. “We honor his service and his contribution to the Marine Corps and our nation. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.”

Walker, from Garland, Texas, reported to active duty on June 13, 2011. His personal decorations include the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

Walker and two other men were in a 17-foot Boston Whaler when it was hit by a wave and overturned at 10 p.m. Friday in Kaneohe Bay.

Two of the men were able to swim to North Beach at the Kaneohe base. Walker was separated from the two. His body was found underwater at 8:25 a.m. Saturday.

The boat washed ashore and was found at 2 a.m. Sunday at Fort Hase Beach.
