Maui police identify burned body found at brush fire

Maui police identified Saturday the man whose burned body was found at the site of an Olowalu brush fire earlier this month as 58-year-old Greg Early.

Early, a Kihei and Tenmile, Ore., resident, was found the morning of March 11 as firefighters were mopping up after battling a small brush fire, firefighters said. Firefighters discovered Early’s body laying next to a burned-out truck and both appeared to have burned in the fire, firefighters said.

The fire broke out about 2:10 a.m. March 11 and burned eight acres along Honoapiilani Highway between Olowalu dump and Kaiheleku-Launiupoko. It spread quickly because of strong winds and jumped the highway at one point.

Firefighters contained the fire by 7:30 a.m. The cause of the fire was not determined.

Police said Early’s cause of death was pending autopsy results.
