Firefighters extinguish East Maui brush fire on steep terrain
Maui firefighters managed to extinguish a brush fire in about two hours Thursday morning in East Maui, despite difficult conditions.
A Hana engine and water tanker responded to the 9:28 a.m. report of a brush fire in Wailua.
Firefighters got to the scene at 10:04 a.m. and found a 50- by 100-foot fire burning next to Hana Highway, the Maui Fire Department reported in a news release.
The fire had crept up a steep embankment on the mauka side of the highway, making it difficult to get to and extinguish, the Fire Department said.
MFD’s Air 1 helicopter was also used to make water drops.
The fire was extinguished at 11:40 a.m.
