Hawaii officials plan to name dispensary owners next week

The Hawaii Department of Health says it’s planning to release the names of Hawaii’s first medical marijuana dispensary owners next week.

The state Health Department says the five-member selection panel is scheduled to release the names April 15. Members of the panel include a University of Hawaii professor, the state’s Board of Agriculture chair and a retired Hawaii judge.

Actor and marijuana advocate Woody Harrelson and video game designer Henk Rogers are also among 59 Hawaii residents who applied for licenses in January.

Under a law passed in 2015, Hawaii will grant eight licenses for marijuana businesses, each of which can have two production centers and two dispensaries. Three licenses will be awarded for Oahu, two for Hawaii Island, two for Maui and one for Kauai.

My pool guess is 2 inside locals and the rest from out of the state. Winner gets a crutch.

Whatever the results it will be frowned upon. I agree with some’s blog on the initial response to eight licenses. Why not have 100?? Put them around like ABC stores and let the better business person win. Competition should be the rule. Or, better still, legalize marijuana.
