HPR pledge drive surpasses $961K goal

Hawaii Public Radio exceeded its goal by raising nearly $964,000 during its semiannual fundraiser.

The independent, member-supported broadcaster received the first $122,000 of “Challenge 2016” before the campaign went on the air April 5. The remainder was raised in 9-3/4 days, the shortest pledge drive since the spring of 2014. HPR’s goal was $961,000.

Ninety-three percent of the funds required to operate the HPR network are raised from within the state, with support from individuals and families making up 63 percent of the revenue. Challenge 2016 gathered 2,757 individual gifts and recruited 478 new monthly subscribers. These “sustaining members” now comprise more than a third of the station’s membership.

Of the gifts received, 505 were from Hawaii island, where construction on the last piece of HPR’s network, a transmitter on Kulani Cone above Hilo, began during the drive. This facility will soon provide to East Hawaii an improved signal via HPR-1 (KANO 91.1) and, for the first time, HPR-2 (KAHU 91.7).

Congrats! It is the only station I listen to. Frankly, the rest of the radio offerings are truly awful.
