Woman charged with beating up man, 67, stealing cane

A 34-year-old Honolulu woman is in jail awaiting trial after she was charged with beating up a 67-year-old man and stealing his cane at a downtown park.

Crina Holt of downtown Honolulu was charged with third-degree assault, a misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in jail. Her bail is $1,000 and she is scheduled to appear in court in May.

The incident happened about 1:30 p.m. April 21 at Kamalii Park behind the fire station at Fort Street Mall and South Beretania Street.

The victim told police he was walking home when he stopped at Kamalii Park where a woman carrying an umbrella and a man approached him. The woman demanded his wallet and jewelry and poked him in the face with the umbrella, injuring his eye. When the victim refused to give up his belongings, the woman punched him in his face several times until he fell against a wall. The two suspects proceeded to kick the man in his stomach and head while he was against the wall.

The victim held onto his valuables, but lost his cane. He told police he was able to run away and last saw Holt swinging his cane at him as he ran off.

He sustained cuts, scrapes, and swelling in the attack.

The next morning, the victim was walking home after getting a yogurt at Safeway when he spotted the woman sitting in the same park. He called police and officers arrested her at the scene for investigation without incident.

    Assault III?

Shouldn’t it be Robbery/Physical force or at least Assault II for hitting him in the head and poking his eye with the umbrella, which caused injury? What is the Prosecutor’s office doing? This can’t just be a misdemeanor.

Good to see investigative techniques used to get to the bottom of what the victim was doing at Safeway the day after the crime.

Only up to a year in jail for basically physically assaulting a senior citizen? That’s outrageous. physical assault is just as bad as a heinous crime such as sexual assault. They both result in psychological and physical scarring. Our laws need to change to better protect our most vulnerable citizens.

Defendant was grossly UNDERCHARGED and bail should be much higher.

Citizens need to ban together and go vigilante on these types of people. I’m sure the guy is in that park every day. I was walking pas this same park just yesterday and witnessed a young asian kid probably in middle school deliberately change his course to avoid these types sitting on the ground in a group blocking the walkway. They looked like the trouble-maker type and I thought, good thing he noticed them there. Maybe nothing would happen but who knows? AS they say = be aware of your surroundings!!! But then again I would welcome punks like that trying to make trouble to me – I could get a lot of governmental/cop frustrations out in just a few minutes work!!
