Former Kmart site in Iwilei will house Longs Drugs, Ross and PetSmart
Hawaii’s first Kmart store, which closed in late March in Iwilei, is slated to be redeveloped for $19.7 million to make way for Longs Drugs, PetSmart and Ross Dress for Less.
Owner Seritage Growth Properties, a New York-based real estate investment trust, disclosed the 79,000-square-foot project in its latest filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
Sears Holdings Corp. recently sold the building at 500 N. Nimitz Highway to Seritage Growth Properties for $11.2 million.
“Having exercised our 100 percent recapture right for this Kmart store, we look forward to maximizing the value of the property by redeveloping it into a multi-tenant shopping center with category-leading retailers including Longs Drugs (CVS), PetSmart and Ross Dress for Less,” Seritage said in a statement.
Construction is scheduled to begin sometime in the second quarter and be completed in about a year.
The Kmart store opened in 1992.

That area is not good. Don’t we have enough of those stores already ?
Personally, I’d rather drive to Iwilei as opposed to Ke’e’au’moku or Ala Moana Shopping Center.
For what purpose?
Too many Longs, Rosses and Petsmarts. Exactly, no Sears, KMarts, Pennys, etc. in Honolulu Downtown to Waikiki areas. A lot of restaurants have left too. How long will Office Depot/Max, Fishers, etc. last? All we get is more expensive condos and expensive stores.
i think there’s only one petsmart in mililani..now people won’t have to drive all the way from kailua
Ross store # 7,342 – and that’s just in Honolulu!
Great, …now the Homeless can walk across the street and get their meds from Longs pharmacy, trim their dogs toenails at PetSmart and get the latest upscale fashions at Ross rather than shop next door at Salvation Army.
Now there will be three times the amount of stolen shopping carts used by the Homeless!
Bring back Caesars Pizza too (they use to be inside K-Mart).
Another poorly stocked Longs store….
yeah i’ve noticed that lately
1992. I remember the record lines at opening. With HPD traffic control. Feeling the kupuna now.
They better hurry and get that place renovated soon. The homeless already Kapu the entrance of the building! Looking seedy and dirty when we passed by the other day!
They should have built low income housing on the site.
That is certainly news to me. After shopping at Costco at Iwilei I can now get pet supplies without having to drive too far. Kalihi Pet Center is just too overpriced for me. With Longs being out of stock of their most popular sale priced items maybe there will be more options for Longs shoppers. They really need to limit the amount each customer can purchase as they’re often out of stock by that Sunday evening of the Sunday ad.
