Australian visitor, 70, drowns at Kauai’s Anini Beach

A 70-year-old visitor from Australia apparently drowned while snorkeling off Kauai’s Anini Beach, according to a Kauai Police Department news release.

The man’s name has yet to be released.

At about 5 p.m. Thursday beachgoers spotted a man floating facedown in the water about 20 feet from the shoreline and called 911, the release said.

Bystanders brought the unresponsive man to the shore and performed CPR until firefighters and paramedics arrived and took over efforts to resuscitate the visitor, but to no avail. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident marks the fifth drowning on Kauai compared to four at the same time last year.
