Rainbow Wahine beat Cal Poly on Senior Day
Hawaii freshman Nicole Lopez gave the Rainbow Wahine softball team a Senior Day win with a walk-off home run in the bottom of the eighth inning in a 1-0 win over Cal Poly today at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
After Cal Poly picked up a 4-3 win in the first game of today’s Big West doubleheader, the Rainbow Wahine claimed the series win on Lopez’s fifth home run of the season.
UH junior Brittany Hitchcock retired the first 17 batters she faced in UH’s home finale, held Cal Poly to two singles and posted her fourth shutout in a complete-game victory.
In the first game, Cal Poly left fielder Courtney Tyler sparked a three-run rally in the top of the fifth inning with a leadoff triple and drove in the go-ahead run in the sixth and Sierra Hyland earned the win with 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.
Hyland and Hitchcock allowed three hits between them through seven innings before Lopez ended the game after falling behind two strikes against Hyland.
UH seniors Keiki Carlos, Sarah McAndrew, Tayana Mata, Dori Ann Sugai and Kiani Wong were honored after playing their final home game.
