A 60-year-old Wailuku man survived after his car apparently ran off Piilani Highway in Kahikinui and plunged approximately 100 feet down a cliff.

A passerby heard the man calling for help from within the vehicle on Sunday at 11:33 a.m. and called police.

Police and firefighters located the man and airlifted him to safety. The man was then transported to Maui Medical Center in serious but stable condition.

An investigation is ongoing, and it is not yet known when the crash occurred and whether speed, drugs or alcohol were factors.
