North Las Vegas police investigate a homicide and a related officer involved shooting at the Silver Nugget Casino in North Las Vegas today.

LAS VEGAS>> Two North Las Vegas casino employees are dead after one killed the other and then was shot by a police officer responding to reports of the fatal fight, police said Thursday.

Police believe the two men were the only ones involved in the pre-dawn brawl that prompted 911 calls at the Silver Nugget, North Las Vegas police Officer Ann Cavaricci said. They weren’t immediately identified.

Cavaricci said the man shot by a patrol officer was responsible for the other man’s death and engaged in what she called a “violent interaction” with several police officers arriving at the scene.

There were witnesses to the fight and police shooting, which Cavaricci said happened in an area of the casino not visible to casino patrons.

The police spokeswoman didn’t immediately say what the initial fight was about, whether it involved weapons, or if the man who was shot was armed. She said investigators don’t think it was a robbery.

The man shot by police was taken to University Medical Center in Las Vegas, where he was pronounced dead. The body of the other man was discovered near the employee storeroom.

The name of the officer wasn’t immediately made public. Cavaricci said he wasn’t injured, and was placed on paid leave pending departmental and district attorney reviews of the shooting.

The Silver Nugget is an old-style locals’ casino, built in 1964. It has a bowling alley, bar, restaurant and a modest-sized banquet room.
