Heavy rains over Maui and the west side of Hawaii island prompted a flood advisory this afternoon and more rain is possible throughout the state through Wednesday, along with vog and humid conditions.

The National Weather Service said rain of more than 2 inches an hour was falling near Ulupalakuaon Maui at 2:20 p.m.

The flood advisory, in effect until 5:15 p.m., includes Kihei, Kula, Wailea-Makena, Keokea, Wailea, Maalaea and Makena on Maui.

On the Big Island, rains of more than 2 inches an hour fell on slopes north of Kailua-Kona at 2:20 p.m. Forecasters expected briefly heavy showers to flare up throughout the afternoon.

The advisory includes the Kona Village Resort, Saddle Road Junction, Puako, Puuanahulu, the Waikoloa Beach Resort , Kalaloa and Holualoa.

Forecasters expect tradewinds to diminish and the possibility of heavy showers to increase as a front approaches the islands, bringing unstable atmospheric conditions tonight and Wednesday.

“The highest chances for showers will be on windward slopes, and as easterly trade winds possibly shift out of the east-southeast, conditions will likely become conducive for heavy shower development along windward slopes of the Koolau Range on Oahu,” forecasters said.

Southeast winds could also bring vog through the Memorial Day weekend.

The light, southeasterly winds could allow showers develop in the afternoons until stronger tradewinds return.

“The weak trade winds will produce modest showers over windward slopes. Meanwhile, afternoon sea breezes will generate clouds and a few afternoon showers over leeward and interior sections, followed by clearing at night as land breezes develop,” forecasters said.

The forecast also calls for humid, Kona weather conditions through the holiday weekend.

“Most islands should experience a humid land and sea breeze regime, featuring afternoon clouds and spotty interior showers with partial clearing at night. Details remain unclear at this time, but volcanic emissions may be drawn up over the smaller islands during the weekend,” forecasters said.
