Arrests made in vandalism of police memorial

These photos taken by Honolulu Police Department Major Kurt Kendro shows the vandalism at the police memorial earlier this month.

Police arrested and cited a 20-year-old man and a juvenile with misdemeanors Thursday in connection with the vandalism of the Hawaii Law Enforcement Memorial on the State Capitol grounds earlier this month.

Officers arrested Jayson Campos and a juvenile boy Thursday afternoon on suspicion of desecration of a public monument or structure. Campos is free after he posted bail of $200. He is scheduled to appear at 8:30 a.m. June 23 in District Court.

Campos was arrested for the May 13 incident where bicycle tire tracks and skateboard wheel markings were discovered on the memorial a few days before it was dedicated.

The case involving the boy will be handled by the Family Court, where proceedings are confidential.

Several police officers spent their off-duty hours power washing the walls to clean the memorial before the dedication ceremony.

A second incident on May 17 was reported by a city worker, who found similar bicycle tracks on the memorial.

No arrests have been made in the second case.

Have them clean that Memorial every Saturday for the next 2 years!

  5. palani says:

More like ignorance than vandalism, I think. It’s not like these self-absorbed perps ever watch or read the news to realize that they are causing damage.

  6. KB says:

somethings wrong…all parents should check their kids if this is really wrong …and please do NOT MAKE MORE LAWS to curb this …

  7. wn says:

If the evidence holds up and Mr. Campos and juvenile found guilty that they will do some jail time. But please do not let this become a “Catch and Release”. I hope that the desecration of a public monument has the same penalty as criminal property damage, which I believe is a felony(?) Will be interested in outcome of this incident.

It’s funny how HPD is able to catch vandals that disrespected a police monument but seem unable to catch any other vandals using spray paint and writing their names all over town and on every bus. Seems like selective enforcement, apparently it has to affect them personally before any real effort will be made to catch vandals.

    • Bdpapa says:

They were off duty to watch something of value to them personally. When is the last time you camped out to catch these graffiti people?

      • kekelaward says:

I missed that part. I know they were off duty to clean it up, but I didn’t see anything about them staking it out on off duty time to catch the crumb. If they did, I hope Campos accidently fell down the steps next to the monument.

Reads like somebody must have turned them in. They were arrested for an earlier incident not on the spot.

What do say we let these young men have their trial before we start in with all the imaginary tortures and punishments.
