PREVIOUS COVERAGE:
Expect warm, humid conditions with morning showers over windward areas and scattered afternoon showers over leeward sections through Memorial Day, National Weather Service forecasters said.
A pool of moisture in the atmosphere that brought heavy rains to Oahu Wednesday and Thursday, moved over Kauai and brought heavy showers this morning.
Forecasters lifted a flash flood warning for Kauai at about 6 a.m. after rains eased. But forecasters say there’s still a chance of more rains today.
The weather service expects a mixture of light tradewinds in the morning and southeasterly Kona winds in the afternoon to continue.
On Oahu, that means windward and mauka showers over the Koolaus in the morning and clouds and rain showers over the Waianae mountains and leeward sections in the afternoon, said John Bravender a meteorologist with the Honolulu office of the National Weather Service.
Rainfall at the Honolulu Airport set a record Thursday with .83 inches recorded, breaking the old record of .19 inches set in 1965. Maui set a rain record on Wednesday with .32 inches falling at the Kahului Airport, breaking the old record of .03 inches set in 1969.
Bravender said it’s possible more records could be set over the weekend, since May is generally not a heavy rain month.
But the rains shouldn’t be as heavy as it was earlier in the week.
The southerly winds also mean more humid conditions, especially in the afternoon. There’s also a chance of vog.
What’s left of an old front may also move over the islands Monday night or Tuesday, bringing an increased chance of showers next week.
The forecast for Honolulu and south shores of Oahu calls for mostly sunny skies this morning with isolated showers and highs between 79 and 87 degrees. Northeast winds of 10 mph will shift to the southeast by early afternoon. Tonight should be mostly clear with light winds and lows between 64 and 72 degrees.
