Arrest of suspect in fatal fight closes freeway

    Honolulu police closed Ewa-bound lanes of H-1 freeway near the Gulick Avenue overpass this morning. This traffic camera image shows the freeway at Houghtailing Street, one of the closest traffic cameras to the incident.

A 48-year-old man died Monday of head injuries from an early morning fight at a North School Street gas station, police said.

Police said the victim and another man were involved in an argument at the Aloha Gas station on North School Street in Kalihi just before 5 a.m. The victim was treated by paramedics and taken in critical condition to the hospital, where he died.

Police chased a suspect to the Gulick Avenue overpass, where he was apprehended. All westbound lanes of the H-1 freeway were closed for nearly an hour in connection with the incident.

The suspect was taken to the hospital for observation. He was later arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder.
