New Kapalama Hale to accommodate City Square services in Kalihi

City Information Services Director Mark Wong explains the new “aloha cue” system for the Kapalama Hale satellite city hall and driver licensing operations. The satellite city hall operations will reopen there June 21, driver licensing on June 27.

Satellite city hall services now available at City Square in Kalihi will be moved to the new Kapalama Hale on June 21, while driver’s licensing operations will make the two-block move to the new location on June 28, Mayor Kirk Caldwell announced today.

To accommodate the move, there will be no satellite city hall services available at City Square on June 20, and driver’s license operations will be shut down on June 27.

Kapalama Hale is at the 55,000-square-foot former Sprint Building on Dillingham Boulevard and Alakawa Street. Entrances to two parking lots — one with 23 stalls and the other with 188 stalls — will be along Alakawa.

Other city agencies are expected to move into the building later, including the Equal Employment Office, the city Ethics Commission, the administrative offices of the Department of Customer Services and the Neighborhood Commission, said Robert Kroning, the city’s director of Design and Construction.

The new Kapalama satelllite city hall and driver’s license operations will feature new self-service kiosks for some transactions, as well as a push-notification queing system, dubbed “aloha que,” intended to cut the amount of time customers spend in line, city Information Services Director Mark Wong said.

The city is leasing the facility at $154,000 a month, but is exercising an option to buy it outright for $27.5 million next year.

Kroning said the city will recoup the cost of the purchase in 14 years.

    There is already significant traffic on Alakawa due to Costco, Best Buy, Home Depot, etc. How are people supposed to enter and exit this facility with people backed up at the traffic light?

    This property was owned by Tradewind Capital Group (headed by Colbert Matsumoto). They had hard time trying to find buyer/renter for many years, until of course someone pulled some strings at the City, and voila…..

    I have a feeling that place will be hard up on parking just like the old location.

      I got a feeling that the city is going to charge for hourly parking. That’s going to go over big with the customers who get free parking at the existing site.

    No mention of the final cost of renovations, the original city press release said that they wanted to make an architectural statement of the new offices and money was no object.
