SAN JOSE, Calif. >> A group of protesters attacked Donald Trump supporters who were leaving the candidate’s rally in San Jose on Thursday night. A dozen or more people were punched, at least one person was pelted with an egg and Trump hats grabbed from supporters were set on fire on the ground.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or arrests, but police had declared the gathering an unlawful assembly and began moving into the remaining crowd to break it up about 90 minutes after the rally ended.

The crowd, which had numbered over 300 just after the rally, had thinned significantly but those that remained, filling about a city block near the San Jose Convention Center, were rowdy and angry.

Some banged on the cars of Trump supporters as they left the rally and chased after those on foot to frighten them.

Police were keeping their distance from the crowd as the scuffles played out, but keeping them from getting any closer to the convention center.

“Our police officers have done an extremely courageous and professional job so far,” San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo told The Associated Press by phone. “We’re all still holding our breath to see the outcome of this dangerous and explosive situation.”

The mayor, a Democrat and Hillary Clinton supporter, criticized Trump for coming to cities and igniting problems that local police departments had to deal with.

“At some point Donald Trump needs to take responsibility for the irresponsible behavior of his campaign,” Liccardo said.

The presumptive GOP nominee spoke for about 50 minutes at the rally, sniping at Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton and calling her speech on foreign policy earlier in the day “pathetic” and “sad to watch.”

Protesters before the speech included Adam Rivas, a 22-year-old community college student who was born and raised in San Jose, was holding a spray-painted sign that read “Dump Trump.”

Rivas said he was particularly disturbed by Trump’s remarks about Mexicans.

“For any one Mexican here he bashes, there are about 20 Mexicans out there who are hard-working and just doing their job,” he said.

Trump supporter Debbie Tracey, a U.S. Navy veteran from San Jose, she came to hear Trump speak, she left his rally with two hats a T-shirt and a handful of signs that said “Veterans for Trump.”

Passing in front of a wall of protesters, many chanting in Spanish, she said she supported Trump’s call for a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.

“I’ll go help build the wall because if you are going to come to this country, land of opportunity, you should be here legally,” she said.

hiliar’s brown shirt goons on the loose again showing their love and tolerance for the processes of democracy and the sharing of ideas.

no wonder her slogan is “fighting for us” while trump is trying to “make america great again” in his appearances around the nation.

Despicable behavior that should be condemned by all the candidates.

Mayor Liccardo- shame on you for not giving the opposition FREEDOM OF SPEECH. You would no way allow it if the situation were reversed.

Drumpf started the bellicose “punch them in the face” rhetoric. He thinks he can rile up his supporters without the slightest consequence or blowback. Now let him realize we’re not going to be complacent in the face of provocations against us. This is America of 2016, not Weimar of 1930.

    • DeltaDag says:

Nevertheless, the increasing hooliganism can only harden the resolution of Trump’s loyal supporters and gain him new ones. Disorderly conduct, clearly committed not by lone wolves but by organized anti-Trump demonstrators (and by extension, Hillary Clinton supporters) only provides a rallying point for people who fear law and order in the streets of America is not what it once was or should be. If the demonstrators can be perceived, through their own words and criminal deeds, as threatening what passes for mainstream America, then they’re unknowingly enabling a Trump victory in November.

“This is America of 2016, not Weimar of 1930”. Your condoning of violence mimics Weimar far more than any of Trump’s bellowing.

kone is right. You are wrong. There–fixed it.

        • Winston says:

Need an explanation? Violent suppression of free political speech (as was the Trump rally) is the meat and potatoes of Fascism, and old fashioned communist agitation. To not see this shows a blind spot as big as Texas.

        • hawaiikone says:

The Weimar Republic set the tone for Hitler, the epitome of a leader using violence as a political tool. bata’s “we’re not gonna be complacent in the face of provocations..”, makes him no less guilty than those succumbing to Hitler’s agenda. Throwing a rock at Trump or at a Jew is still throwing a rock.

    • Winston says:

The irony is strong with this one. Explanation: you justify your own side’s fascist acts.

These idi**ts don’t realize that this (Violent Riot), will only HELP DONALD TRUMP. Assaulting Trump supporters & Burning the American Flag? Not Cool!
In the past we had Protesters, protesting Republican Presidential candidates….and guess what? They were elected President!
    So my question is:
Why is Bernie and Hillary NOT condemning these Riots of VIOLENCE? These are their thugs, they are the ones inciting Violence, assaulting innocent victims.oppressing our freedom of speech & burning the American Flag. And at the same time waving the Mexican Flag ? Is this a message that Mexico has finally invaded & taken over California? A State of the United States!

And Where are the Liberal Media, Democrats and the President in condemning this Violent Riot…..Surely they all can’t be like the Mayor of San Jose Sam Licardo. Blaming Donald Trump for this Violence and just Sitting on the sidelines…… holding their breath.IMUA

There are a lots of videos of the protests around. Was surprised at the scale and amount of violence shown in the videos and the downplaying of this by the media. Not surprised, expected. Wrong candidate the object of the protest.
