Water main break creates hole in Foster Village big enough to fit car

A water main break in Foster Village created a hole in Punihi Street big enough to fit a car this afternoon.

Foster Village resident Blaine Fergerstrom said when he came home, he saw the hole and that the Board of Water Supply turned off the water main servicing Punihi Street near Piikea Street. Nineteen customers were without water service.

Fergerstrom said a contractor had just finished repaving Punihi Street when the water main below the road broke.

The residential area was built in the 1950s and had a water main break about 40 feet away about 10 years ago that was twice as big, Fergerstrom said.

The Honolulu Board of Water Supply said a report of an 8-inch water main break occurred just before 1 p.m. and a crew was on scene to fix the water main and road during the night.
