RENO, Nev. >> Placer County authorities have ended their efforts to recover the body of a University of Nevada football player who is presumed to have drowned in Lake Tahoe.

Marc Ma, a 20-year old from Honolulu and ‘Iolani graduate, had been on a paddle board trip with several football players on June 10, when the group encountered strong winds off Lake Tahoe’s west shore. Ma’s board was found adrift.

Search and rescue crews have been looking for Ma’s remains using side-scan sonar and remote-operated underwater cameras. But sheriff’s officials said today that their efforts have been unsuccessful.

Although the search has ended, Sgt. Dave Hunt says the case remains an open investigation.

A 2014 ‘Iolani graduate, Ma was a first-team ILH football all-star in 2012 and ’13 as a member of the Raiders’ defensive line and was an honorable mention All-State pick as a senior. Listed at 6 feet 2 and 230 pounds, Ma redshirted at Nevada last fall and was heading into his sophomore year with the Wolf Pack.
