Molokai man dies after he is hit by riderless motorcycle
Maui police have identified the 73 year-old Molokai man who died from injuries Wednesday after he was struck by motorcycle that had thrown its driver while the victim walked on North Market Street at the Iao Bridge in Wailuku.
Charles Kaahanui of Kaunakakai was identified as the victim, who was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center, where he died.
A 19-year-old Hoolehua, Molokai, woman, who was driving the motorcycle, was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center where she was treated for non-life threatening injuries.
Maui police said that at 1:55 p.m. the motorcycle operator headed east on Kahawai Street lost control of the red and green Honda dirt bike after failing to stop at the stop sign and tried to make a right turn onto Market Street.
The motorcycle crossed the road, jumped the curb and ran into the bridge rail, police said. The operator was ejected from the bike and went over the railing and fell into the river below the bridge. The bike continued to travel along Market Street and struck Kaahanui, who was walking on the sidewalk.
Police are investigating whether speed, drugs and alcohol were involved in the incident.

Very sad for the poor pedestrian.
Wow! How unlucky is that!
Bad Karma?
wow
It’s illegal to ride a dirt bike on county roads. Female rider should be arrested and charged with negligent homicide.
Poor 73 year old pedestrian, feel for his family.
agree…we see too many locals who cannot control their cars, mopeds, motorcycles. Please have these people take the bus or walk.
And of course Allie’s family are perfect drivers. It’s amazing she can even drive. Difficult to see the road when your head is stuck up your lower torso.
When you are in N Dakota what is there to hit? lol
How shocking Allie, you’re nor blaming Trump for this?
No but I think people need to be extra careful when driving these types of vehicles. We have way too many accidents and injuries from these vehicles.
Actually, people need to be careful driving all types of vehicle.
Seems like if you see *any* locals it’s too many, eh allie? I hope you have some friends.
The word “local” for me means anyone who lives here. They can be Caucasian, Filipino, Japanese, Korean, etc. It si a geographical term.
That’s my girl!! I still owe you a dinner Allie!!
give her two cans of Alpo and she’s good.
I think the rider should be some responsibility over the pedestrian’s unfortunate death. She made an illegal turn, rode a dirt bike on a county road, and her vehicle killed another person. There should be some charges.
I agree!
If the bike was licensed, no problem? Wonder if it was?
Dirt bikes rarely have tags.
My deepest ALOHA to his ohana.
Molokai being small, I wonder if the families know each other.
the accident happened on Maui
What a freak accident. How sad for both.
A freak accident that claimed a life, injured another and affected the lives of friends and family members within a span of time, leaves one to contemplate how precious to love and be loved by all. You will never know when death comes and robs you from saying good bye. Heartfelt condolences to all affected by this accident!
Your posts are always mature and compassionate and with Aloha.
I agree. It’s refreshing isn’t it?
Agree.
So sad, condolences to his ohana.
The Traffic Law wasn’t followed. She flew passed a stop sign. She fell off of her motorcycle. The motorcycle killed a senior citizen pedestrian on the sidewalk. She must pay for her crime.
